Door Buying Guide
Choosing the Right Door Material
The material you choose for your door impacts its durability, maintenance requirements, and aesthetic appeal. Here's a breakdown of the most common door materials:
Wood Doors
Offer natural beauty and warmth but require regular maintenance to prevent warping or rotting.
Fiberglass Doors
Resistant to dents, scratches, and moisture, making them ideal for exterior use with minimal maintenance.
Steel Doors
Provide excellent security and durability at an affordable price, though they may require painting over time.
Vinyl Doors
Low-maintenance, energy-efficient, and resistant to moisture, making them a popular choice for patio and sliding doors.
Measuring for a New Door
Proper measurements are crucial for a successful door installation. Follow these steps to ensure accurate measurements:
- Measure the Width: Measure the width of the door opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement to ensure a proper fit.
- Measure the Height: Measure the height of the door opening on the left, middle, and right sides. Again, use the smallest measurement.
- Check for Square: Measure the diagonal from corner to corner in both directions. If the measurements are not the same, the opening is out of square and may need adjustment.
- Consider Door Swing: Determine whether the door will swing inward or outward and note the hinge side (left or right).
- Account for Clearance: Ensure there is adequate clearance for the door to swing freely without obstruction.
If you're unsure about taking measurements, our Lowe's associates can assist you or arrange for a professional measurement service.
